my solution- first step

September 30, 2008

The problem that I am dealing with is that fossil fuels are running out and we will soon need a new source of energy, not to mention the fact that the emitions from using the fossil fuels are harmful to our environment.  What has caused this problem is that us humans have desided to base our way of life on the dependence of a nonrenewable energy source that spits out CO2 when we use it and is hurting our ozone layer.  This effects people because almost everyone uses cars, but when we run out of gas, there will be problems.  Plus negative effects on our environment should be the concern of everyone.  The running out of fossil fuels will effect most of the world, and definatly here.  This problem has been around basicly since we started building cars, even though we weren’t aware of it at that point.  I guess we have to point the finger at the people from the industrial revolution because it isn’t extremly clear exactly who to blame.  Other options have been suggested such as solar power, wind power, nuclear power, biomass, geothermal, tidal power, wave power, and hydroelectric.  These solutions have helped some, but not enough people use them to do much good.  I want to solve this problem because this will have a huge effect on my future and many others, and I’m a bit of an environmental nut.

Computer History

ASCII White is a really fast machine. It uses 1s and 0s to express information and it can model molecules. It takes up a lot of space and requires much attention. It has to have two chillers to keep it from overheating. Charles Babbage was a scientist. He created the cow catcher which is the thing on the front of trains. He is considered the father of ASCII White. He worked on a project that would compute for ten years before he gave up on it. Then he made something called an analytical engine. It used holes to process information. Herman Hollerith invented the method of punching out cards. It is fed into a machine then the information is processed using electrical wiring. This process drastically sped up voting. This was the foundation of the IBM company. Colossus a computer meant to break codes. This was during the war with Germany so this was important. It matches letters to break codes and it worked really well. It was one of the most closely guarded secrets of the war. Mauchley and Eckert created ENIAC. It was really big. It had 1800 vacuum tubes. The vacuums would burn out quickly so they were constantly being replaces. It could multiply and divide pretty well. It had a memory of ten twenty-digit numbers. John Yon Neumann had a photographic memory. He wrote a paper about a computer with input and output and a better memory. In his paper he explained where memory and stuff would be stored. He had worked with Mauchley and Eckert, but didn’t give them any credit for the ideas. IBM dominated the computer market. Computers were becoming smaller and NASA was needing one small enough to take into space. The use of silicon greatly helped making computer chips smaller. Kilby and Noyce created integrated circuits. Through this all information could be put on one silicon chip. Ted Hoff created the microprocessor It is what makes computers today possible. Every thing today is put on chips. Douglas Engelbart worked to make computers easier to use. He created the mouse and key pad that are used today. Xerox invented ALTO. It mad a mouse and laser pointer and so forth. It cost 1800 dollars, so it was too expensive for individuals. Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs created Apple 1. Jobs was a high school drop out, but he was really smart. Altair came out as first mini computer. Then they introduced the Apple 2. It had a key pad and four killabites of memory and a floppy drive disc. Bill Gates is the owner of Macentash and is very rich. He was accused of stealing information.

1. stuff I know is my first blog

2. autobloggreen, slashgear, and treehugger are blogs that are about new technologies that are often environmentally friendly.

3. a blog is a web log

4. when you are mad you should calm down before sending an email

5. you shouldn’t use large fonts, colors or all capital letters because it bothers the reader

6. it is called spam

3. I think that Dogpile and google worked better. I honestly prefer Google over the other two.

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia on line.  My results all seemed to be about the same.

Dutch Biomass Plant to Use Chicken Poop to Power 90,000 Homes

I think this is a really cool new technology. They are using chicken poop to power houses. This is a little disgusting, but it is a good idea. This is helpful because it uses up the excess chicken poop and kind of cleans up our environment. I don’t think it would work if everyone used it though because there isn’t enough chicken poop in the world. But it is good for some people to use.

The Energy Ball: Another Innovative Option in Home Wind Turbines

This article talks about using personal wind turbans at home.  This will help people because it will cut down on their energy bill because they will have an alternate source.

I think the wind Turbine is the most important because I have thought for a while that it is very important for us to find a new energy source.

stuff I know

I know very little about computers. I didn’t even have an e-mail before this. Computers confuse me very easily, so I’m going to need a lot of help. I think I need to warn you that if it seems like I’m being stupid on purpose, I’m not. I am under the impression that computers hate me. So this is going to be a really frustrating class for me.
